Description: Ian Malcolm's collection of Australian portable radios, from the '50s to the '70s.
Here are some of my AM radios. My collection is of Australian manufacturers who mostly all disappeared from the market with the introduction of FM broadcasting in 1975. The manufacturers lobbied the government to introduce FM on the UHF band which would have given them a supply monopoly. When the decision was made to use the international VHF band, and the government slashed the import tariffs, they could not compete with the Japanese manufacturers.
