Inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold When I heard I'd received the Girls Inc. college scholarship, I was speechless. I knew my dream of becoming a computer engineer was achievable. Growing up in Alabama, Alicia always knew she was different. She knew she was meant to be a leader. However, bringing out those leadership qualities was hard for Alicia who often felt like she didn't fit in with her peers because of her diverse, mixed background. Forced to deal with hurtful issues like racism, Alicia developed low self-esteem and a lack of confidence in her abilities. With the guidance of trusted mentors at Girls Inc., Alicia was exposed to programs that taught her to not only accept the qualities that set her apart from the crowd, but to embrace them and use them to empower her to succeed. Today, Alicia is a strong, smart, and bold student at the University of Alabama in Mobile where she is preparing for a career as an Occupational Therapist.
