Whale Shark: Natural History Notebooks The whale shark is the largest known fish. It reaches 20 m (66 ft.) in length and weighs 20 t (22 tn.). It is mainly solitary in nature, but it can also be found in groups of more than 100 individuals. Despite its impressive appearance, it is harmless to humans. Scuba divers and underwater swimmers have clambered unmolested over its body.
