Houghton Mifflin Reading: Meet Jose Aruego and Ariane Dewey As a child in the Phillipines, Jose Aruego liked to read comic books and draw cartoon animals. There were many different kinds of animals at his family's house, including pigs, horses, dogs, cats, and chickens. He thinks that may be why he likes to draw animals so much, especially animals doing funny things. Sometimes when he is drawing animals he giggles because their expressions are so funny! Aruego was a lawyer in the Philippines before he came to the United States to go to art school. His favorite city is New York.
