The Webtender: Halloween Drinks Celebrate Halloween with The Webtender October 31 - Halloween: This is the night before All Saints Day on November 1. The history of Halloween can be traced to the ancient Druids of the second century B.C. At the waning of the year - as the daylight hours grew shorter - they celebrated their festival of "summer's end." Winter food stores were opened for the first time. Householders extinguished the fires on their hearths, while priests lit bonfires on hilltops to honor the sun and frighten evil spirits. The head of each family received live embers from the bonfires to re-kindle the hearth - which would then be kept burning for another year. The souls of the dead were said to wander on this night - when good spirts were said to arrive and frighten them away.
