She and I often used to discuss this – basically, what follows here – and we had a deep difference of opinion. Intellectually, I’m a plodder and a few decades of plod have gone into this. I hoped the thinking behind it might propose an avenue for research. When a hypothesis is tested and validated, then it may be of some use. Until then, it’s of absolutely no use to man nor beast. That was my argument. She disagreed. I could see no point in publishing anything. She disagreed. As I’ve said, she was dying – she had terminal cancer – and I made a promise. What she actually said was, ‘write the book and you’ll get your research.’ Eventually, I just said OK.
