South Carolina Wilderness Medicine Course Over the past several decades, the number of people participating in outdoor and adventure activities has grown exponentially. Interest in hiking, camping, canoeing, scuba and other activities has steadily increased and US National Parks are enjoying record attendance every year. It is logical that wilderness related emergencies parallel the increased interaction with the outdoors. It is the goal of this course to provide physicians and health care professionals with the practical and theoretical knowledge necessary to deal with a wide range of wilderness, travel and environmental emergencies.

| Description: | The South Carolina Wilderness Medicine Course was established in 1998 and since its inception has helped to educate medical students and resident physicians about the fundamental principals of Wilderness Medicine. The course has grown rapidly from an original enrollment of eight medical professionals to more than thirty in 2011. The course is jointly sponsored by the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and the Emergency Medicine Residency Program and Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital, Columbia, South Carolina. Located in the geographic center of South Carolina between the coast and the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains, Columbia serves as the base for the course, from where a wide range of interactive wilderness medicine activities can be undertaken. Enrollment is open to residents and medical students. |
