FAO's Animal Production and Health Division Programme Against African Trypanosomosis (PAAT) Programme Against African Trypanosomosis (PAAT) African Trypanosomosis (sleeping sickness), which affects people and livestock, lies at the heart of Africa’s struggle against poverty. The disease, transmitted mainly by tsetse flies, is prevalent in 37 countries among the poorest of the world. Probably more than any other disease affecting both livestock and people, Trypanosomosis threatens human and livestock health and agricultural production, and, thereby, rural development and poverty alleviation in sub-Saharan Africa.
