Giardia Infection - HealthLink BC File #10 is a parasite that infects the intestines of humans and animals. When a person gets sick, the infection is called giardiasis, or ‘beaver fever’. Giardiasis is one of the more frequently identified infectious causes of diarrhea lasting more than 2 weeks. It is a common cause of diarrheal illness among hikers in wilderness areas and travellers who drink water that has not been properly filtered, treated or boiled.
