Home - Children's Cancer Foundation This WELCOME message was taped by The Children's Cancer Foundation, Inc.'s beloved President and Founder, Shirley Howard. We are sad to report that Shirley died on August 14, 2013 at the age of 88 after a long illness. For over 30 years Shirley dedicated her life to saving children's lives through Pediatric Oncology research and treatment. Through her efforts and the efforts of hundreds of volunteers whom she inspired, CCF has awarded over $34,500,000 in grants to MD/DC/NVA hospitals and researchers. Countless Pediatric Oncology doctors got their start through CCF grants. The lives of children, not only in this local area, but all over the world have been made better because of Shirley. It was said at her funeral that Shirley and CCF changed the face of childhood cancer more than any other organization in this area. Shirley did all of this working out of her basement with only one other employee, until a few years ago. Her accomplishments were achieved through hard work and perserverence. It was almost impossible to say "no" to Shirley. As one MD/DC business owner used to say, "Is that Shirley? Go ahead and give her what she wants. She'll keep calling until she gets it anyway." That was our Shirley, and she never quit - even when she became ill.Â
