Very important, at the introduction of a new programming language standard, is nowadays that the language should permit efficient compilation and execution not only on conventional computers, but also on parallel and massively parallel systems. Somewhat simplified it could be stated that Fortran 90 is efficient on conventional computers and on vector processors, but less efficient on parallel processors. The reason for this is that in Fortran it does not exist any commands for partition into parallel processes, except for those that follow directly from the array concept, with its operators and functions.
