- J.J. Maloney
- Born in St. Louis in 1940, Maloney spent 16 1/2 years in reform schools and prison (four life sentences for murder and armed robbery). As a convict, Maloney educated himself and became an artist, poet and book reviewer for the Kansas City Star. In 1972 he was paroled and began work the next day as a reporter for the Kansas City Star. As an investigative reporter Maloney won many journalism awards, and spent three years investigating the Kansas City Mafia.
