These processors are equipped with some type of communications port to allow the transfer of collected data to a central computer for analysis of the operation of multiple machines. A frequently used method for collecting the data is a wired daisy-chained system using RS-485 communication protocol. The disadvantage of this system is the initial cost of the wiring and the possible signal interference along the entire chain if a communication problem develops in a machine connected to the chain. These problems are difficult to diagnose and in some cases can cause damage to the processors on other machines.
