Block printing came to Christian Europe as a method for printing on canvas, which was common in 1300. The images printed on canvas for religious purposes can be very large and elaborate, and when paper became relatively easy to obtain, around 1400, very quickly transferred to small woodcut religious images and playing cards printed on paper. These prints were produced in large numbers from about 1425 onwards.
