NewArtCentre. Sculpture Park and Gallery. Wood, epoxy and stainless steel 166 × 73 × 63.5 cm / 5ft 5 3/8 × 2ft 4 3/4 × 2ft 1 ins is 'Like a Baby' by Richard Deacon. Deacon is renowned for his inventive use of a wide range of media, often manipulating natural materials - such as wood - so that they behave unnaturally. In this respect, 'Like a Baby' is typical of much of his sculpture but the thickness of the steamed and twisted timber he has used, makes this work a particularly extraordinary achievement. Deacon has often combined bent wood with steel to great lyrical effect. Unlike the monumental and dramatic works such as 'Laocoon' and 'After' made in the 1990s, however, 'Like a Baby' is a tighter, more contained and discrete sculpture of human scale. It nonetheless suggests the potential for movement, the constricted wood is kept under tension but looks as if it might unfurl at any moment if it were allowed to do so. The glue used to join the work’s components is clearly visible, which along with pencil marks and notations, is left as part of the sculpture's overall finish. Indeed, Deacon has famously referred to himself as 'fabricator' and his works often reveal the means of their construction.
