Description: | Several summers ago, I attempted to turn one of my male friends on to "Sex and the City" by showing him what I believed to be a great episode, only to have him turn up his nose and proclaim it to be "a chick show." [...] said pal has acquired a fiancee as well as an addiction to the HBO show once dismissed as marabou fluff. An absence of truthful depictions of what goes on behind closed doors for gay characters on television has long been a sore point among keen cultural observers. Yes, "The L Word," executive-produced by Ilene Chaiken, is going to take a lot of knocks during its maiden season, starting with the cast's fashion-model homogeneity -- not a plain Jane in the bunch; so typical of TV! -- and ending with the telenovela nature of its scripts. On the downside, their complexity highlights the underdevelopment of Pam Grier's role as Bette's half-sister, Kit, a screwed-up sage with a fading music career. |
