His intention is to excite in the townspeople a desire to organize a brass band, to collect their money for instruments, uniforms and sheet music, and then to disappear with the loot without teaching anyone to toot a horn as he had promised. As long as a conniver isn't mean, but is merely wily and clever, audiences will love a crook. And perhaps that's the secret of the popularity of the con-man in "THE MUSIC MAN." He is thoroughly ingratiating in his swindling.
