Description: Review and first chapter of 'Barney's Version'. (December 27, 1997)
The protagonist of Mordecai Richler's novel is rambling, forgetful and may be a killer. More on Mordecai Richler, from The New York Times Archives ne of the hallmarks of Mordecai Richler's satiric novels has been their capacity to shock and outrage. When ''The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz'' was published in 1959, charges of anti-Semitism rained down on Richler for his portrayal of a pushy, grasping Jew. And when ''Cocksure'' -- banned by the W. H. Smith bookstore chain in Britain -- was reviewed in 1968, it was characterized as ''truly dirty.'' Thirty years later, a novel must be a lot more outrageous to be called dirty, and what was once considered obscene in Richler's work now feels relatively tame. While his aim is still deadly, the familiar objects of Richler's scorn -- Quebec separatists, rabid feminists, self-deceiving Jews and self-crowned laureates -- now verge on parody and have, in this latest novel, become standing targets, unworthy of satiric overkill.
