William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) - Find A Grave Memorial Playwright. Unquestionably the most famous English Language writer in history, his body of work is so loved and so studied that it has been translated into more languages than any other printed work except the bible. He was born in 1564 to a farmer and gentry and from a very early age showed an interest in storytelling. By 1592, he had established himself as a talented writer and actor the theater of London but when plague closed the London theatres for two years he toured and in the meantime wrote two long poems, "Venus and Adonis" and "The Rape of Lucrece". Establishing himself by first printing his name on "Love's Labor" the remainder of his career would be spent in London where he would write some of the greatest plays ever put to paper, including, "Hamlet", "Julius Caesar", "Henry V", "King Lear", "Macbeth", "Othello", "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Romeo and Juliet", "The Merchant of Venice", "Much Ado About Nothing" and many, many others. He passed away on his 52nd birthday, and the cause of his death remains a mystery. He died on April 23(julian calendar) which is May 4.
