Description: Nineteenth-century engravings give two possible ways of staging the gage-throwing scene before Richard in Act I.
The image above breaks the challengers apart, not just because Richard intervenes between them but because the legal authorities in front dominate the space. at the two who are throwing down the gage in this image shows dramatically how separated they are. In the image below, all the major participants are tightly concentrated together, and the only obeisance going on is Mowbray kneeling to take up the gage.
