The Best of the Jersey Shore... Located in Margate, New Jersey, Lucy is an architectural monument to a bygone era. Built in 1881 by a real estate developer hoping to attract attention to what was then called "South Atlantic City", she stands six stories tall and weighs over 90 tons. Made of nearly a million pieces of wood, Lucy was a major tourist attraction for many years. In the 1940's attention withered, and in the 1960's she was closed to the public due to deteriorating condition. Rescued by the city of Margate, a major renovation began, centered around the volunteer "Save Lucy Committee". More than $500,000 has been raised by donations and grants to preserve this historic treasure. Lucy has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service. Lucy is located at 9200 Atlantic Ave. in Margate. She is open for tours weekends in spring and fall and during the week from mid-June to Labor Day. For more information call 609-823-6473.
