Hello and welcome. My name is Susan Butts and I am a basketmaker from Savannah, GA. I make all of my baskets using the coiling technique, and use primarily materials provided by nature. My first baskets were made out of grass and weeds about 12 or 13 years ago. I was living in Northern Virgina at the time, and the only pine needles available were from the white pines, which are quite short and hard to work with. I think I made one with pine needles and decided it was not for me. When I moved down here to Georgia, I was so happy to find long pine needles all over my yard. I thought I would try making some baskets again (I hadn't made any for a few years) and this time use these wonderfully long needles. I was hooked again, and have been making them steadily ever since.
