Three non-migratory subspecies, the Florida (Grus pratensis), Mississippi (Grus pulla), and Cuba (Grus nescotes) cranes, are classified as either threatened or endangered. North America has one of the most populous cranes (Sandhill) and also the rarest (Whooping). About 50 percent of the crane harvest takes place in the Central Flyway. Cranes are the tallest of all game birds, and take flight with a run into the wind.
